Railroad Historical Society Annual Convention will visit New London and Waupaca

On August 19 – 22, 2010 the Soo Line Historical & Technical Society (SLHTS) will hold its 32nd annual convention in the Fox Cities Area. The Holiday Inn Riverwalk in Neenah will be the headquarters for the convention. Non SLHTS Members can register and participate in the convention for a nominal fee. The SLHTS has approximately 1,100 members with the goal of preserving and promoting the rich history of the Soo Line Railroad, and all other related railroads. Rails currently operated by Canadian National Railway through the Fox Cities Area are former tracks of the Soo Line Railroad. It is anticipated that members from 10 – 15 states and one Canadian Provence will be in attendance. This will be the first SLHTS Convention in the Fox Cities Area since the society purchased a building in Appleton to house the Society’s Archives. An Archives Committee was created in 1985 and has since saved photos, documents, railroadiana, and has been instrumental in helping to save and restore historic Soo Line Railroad artifacts. Highlights of the convention include an all day delux bus all day tour Friday, August 20th, of area historical sites, including the Waupaca Soo Line Depot, the Heritage Historical Village in New London, and Winneconne’s Historical Society Museum Complex. At the Holiday Inn Riverwalk on Saturday, August 21st, there will be a model railroad flee market FREE and open to the public from 8:30 – Noon. There will also be clinics on area history, and railroad modeling. Round tables on specific modeling projects of SLHTS members, on photography, and Soo Line Veterans will also be offered. Saturday evening will be the Annual Banquet with Kerck Kelsey of Freeport Maine giving a presentation on William D. Washburn and the building of the Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie, and Atlantic Railway across Northern WI. Mr Kelsey recently authored “Prairie Lightening – The Rise and Fall of William Dddrew Washburn”. Mr Kelsey extensively used the SLHTS Archives in completing his third book on the Washburn Family. Saturday evening will conclude with the annual auction with the earnings going to the Archives Committee. Sunday morning will conclude the 32nd SLHTS Convention with the Annual Business Meeting and a Board of Directors Meeting.
