Diamond Cats go 1-2 in National Tournament play

LESEUR, MINN. – Clintonville traveled to LeSeur Minnesota to represent Wisconsin at the Central Plains Division II Regional Tournament. After a first game victory over LeSeuer-Henderson, they were defeated by Faith Lutheran of Las Vegas NV and Pratt Kansas on Friday, Aug. 6. These two teams would eventually meet for the championship with Faith Lutheran winning the tournament. The Class A State Champion Diamond Cats finished their season with a 22-4 record.

Patrick VanDaalwyk got the win, going five innings allowing no runs on 1 hit,1 walk, and striking out 5. Jesse Wiley pitched the sixth and seventh innings, giving up 2 hits, 1 walk and striking out 1. At the plate The D-Cats were led by Nate Simpson 3X3, Wiley 2X4 (2B, 1 RBI), Chase Stenson 2X4 (2B), Jake Riemer 1X2 (2 RBI), and VanDaalwyk 1X3 (1 RBI).

Faith Lutheran/Las Vegas 6

Las Vegas scored runs in the first and secondnd innings to take a 2-0 lead. The D-Cats tied the game in the third inning when with 2 out and nobody on, Wiley singled, Stenson was hit by a pitch, VanDaalwyk drew a walk to load the bases, and Justin Thebo came up with a big 2 RBI single. The D-Cats took the lead in the fifth inning by scoring 2 runs which included a Kevin Ignacio RBI single. F/L got one run back in the bottom of the fifth, the D-Cats got it back on another RBI single by Thebo in the top of the sixth to lead 5-3. F/L scored 1 run in the bottom of the sixth and 2 in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. Stenson pitched well but took the loss allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits,2 walks, and 5 strike outs. Thebo led the D-Cats at the plate, going 3X3 (3 RBI), Stenson was 2X3, and Eric Krause was 2X5.

Pratt Kansas 19

The Diamond Cats were eliminated in a game that got away from them early. Kansas hit 5 homeruns in the game, scoring 1 run in the first, 6 runs in the second, 3 runs in the third, and 9 in the fourth. Wiley took the loss on the mound for the D-Cats giving up 8 runs. The D-Cats rallied for 4 runs in the top of the fifth with a Wiley 2RBI single and a 2 run home run by Stenson.

Leading hitters for the Diamond Cats in the Central Plains Tournament were Thebo 5X9 (4 RBI), Stenson 5X10 (2-2B,1 HR,2 RBI), and Wiley 5X11 (2-2B,3RBI).
