Work begins on State Highway 49

Gov. Jim Doyle signed a $1.7 million contract to improve 9.7 miles of State Highway 49 between Poy Sippi and Fremont in Waupaca and Waushara counties.

The project was advanced using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as part of a national effort to create jobs.

American Asphalt of Wisconsin is the prime contractor for the project. Crews will resurface the road and repair existing culverts.

Construction is scheduled to begin Aug. 16 and be completed in October.

During construction, State 49 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures.
