New London woman charged with forgery

Brittany M. Barbiaux, 21, New London, was charged Aug. 17 with uttering a forgery.

On April 21, Barbiaux’s former roommate accused her of taking a $500 money order.

She told police that Barbiaux had called her and said that a $500 money order had come for her in the mail. Barbiaux then allegedly asked if she could have $100 from the money, but the roommate said no. Twenty minutes later, Barbiaux called again and said she was mistaken and the money order was not for the roommate, according to the criminal complaint.

The roommate became suspicious and subsequently called the bank, which indicated that the money order had been cashed.

Barbiaux reportedly told police that she had permission to cash the money order. The roommate denied it.

Barbiaux faces up to six years in prison if convicted of forgery.
