Waupaca volleyball team places second at Bay Port Invitational

The Waupaca Comet volleyball placed second at Saturday’s Bay Port Invitational in Howard.

The Comets also dropped an Eastern Valley Conference match to Clintonville Sept. 30.

HOWARD – Waupaca and Menasha posted a 5-2 record at the eight-team tournament.

Menasha ended up placing first because the Bluejays defeated the Comets in head-to-head play 27-25, 17-25, 15-13.

The Comets also lost to Hortonville, but defeated Appleton West, Bay Port, Green Bay West, New London and West DePere.

Team leaders included Kristen Fuss with 38 kills, seven aces and 73 digs; Carli Navin with 28 kills, three aces and 64 digs; Hannah Butkiewicz with 19 kills, three aces and 26 digs; Taylor Grenlie with eight kills, three aces and 100 digs; Megan Plunkett with seven kills, two aces and 72 assists; Megan Grenlie with five kills, five aces and 37 digs; and Nicole Donaldson with five aces, 63 assists and 29 digs.

The Truckers won the first two games 25-18, 25-22; Waupaca won the next two 22-25, 25-27; and Clintonville prevailed in the fifth 15-11.

Team leaders included Butkiewicz with seven kills; Fuss with six kills and 28 digs; Navin with five kills, 24 digs and three aces; Marisa Webb with four kills; Taylor Grenlie with 23 digs; Megan Grenlie and Donaldson with two aces; Donaldson with 14 assists; and Plunkett with 19 assists.

The Comets will host Berlin at 7 tonight (Thursday) before playing at Fox Valley Lutheran Tuesday and at Weyauwega-Fremont Thursday, Oct. 14.
