Lessons from the Art opens in Iola

Lessons from the Art – Music/Dance/Art Academy offers private music lessons for a variety of instruments, voice and dance for all ages.

The new business, run by Tammie Jo Berg, offers infant music and movement classes, as well as classes in a multitude of art mediums, and will showcase art on consignment in the future. The vision of Lessons from the Art is “to encourage involvement in the arts by providing quality opportunities to create, interact, experience and learn, resulting in lifetime enjoyment.”

The business is located at 189 N. Main St. and is currently under renovation. Instrument classes have begun at temporary locations at the Iola Community Center and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Dance classes began Oct. 13 at the Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness & Aquatic Center.

“We hope to have all classes at the Main Street location by the end of the month,” Berg said.

Current lessons are offered in piano; violin – Suzuki and traditional; guitar – acoustic, electric, bass, classical; drum; and harp. Also, world renowned opera singer John Keyes will provide voice lessons.

There is also a free introductory offer to infants and toddlers. A month of free classes will be offered in a Music and Movement class for children 4 months to 5 years of age at 10 a.m. Monday beginning Nov. 1. Preregistration is required.

Once the instrumental and dance classes are off the ground, a variety of art classes will be offered throughout the year in a multitude of mediums. Some will be one-time classes, while others will be offered over several weeks.

Classes in the immediate future include beginning digital photography; quilting; watercolor; working with wool – felting, knitting, crochet, using local fiber; jewelry making; and basketry.
