Cardinals oust Indians from state tournament

The season ended Friday, Oct. 22, for the Weyauwega-Fremont volleyball team after the Indians dropped three of four games to Stevens Point Pacelli in a Division 3 regional semifinal in Weyauwega.

The Cardinals are still alive in the state tournament, as they defeated top-seeded Oshkosh Lourdes Saturday, Oct. 23, to win a regional championship.

W-F won the first game 25-16, but the Cardinals came back with 25-21, 26-24 and 27-25 wins.

“Overall, we couldn’t have asked any more from the girls, as they played the entire match with intensity and passion,” coach Rena Tomaszewski said. “We came on strong in the first set and gave Pacelli a 25-16 loss. Thereafter, it was a battle all the way to the end.

“The seniors really stepped it up to fight for their last match of the year and the sophomores just showed more and more how much of a threat they are going to be in the next two years.”

Team leaders included Teal Tomaszewski with 29 digs; Dani Johnson with two block kills and nine kills; Brittaney Billington and Danielle Austreng with eight kills; Bailey Kapitzke and Rachel Knecht with seven kills; Kate Wieters with 15 assists; Knecht with 13 assists; Austreng with 11 service points; and Kapitzke with 10 service points

The Indians ended their season with a 13-12 record.

“The girls really fought hard this last match,” Tomaszewski said. “We are very proud of the way they played. Being able to hold your head up after a loss is important. They played the way we needed them to play.”
