Waupaca’s Wheeler returning to state

Seven area runners – three from New London and one from Waupaca, Amherst, Clintonville and Hortonville – will wrap up their season Saturday, Oct. 30, at the State Cross Country Meet in Wisconsin Rapids.

Waupaca’s Zach Wheeler will make his second straight trip to state after placing fourth in the boys’ race Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Division 2 Freedom Sectional with a time of 16:31. Clintonville’s Samantha Hohn also qualified for state at the sectional by turning in a time of 15:28, good enough for fifth place in the girls’ race.

Amherst’s Jared Lutz is the only area runner to advance out of the Division 3 Athens Sectional, held Friday, Oct. 22. He placed fourth in the boys’ race in 17:03.

New London’s Michael Heise, Annalise Schroeder and Macy Egan and Hortonville’s Tony Cass qualified out of the Division 1 Wausau West Sectional, held Oct. 22.

Cass and Heise placed seventh and ninth, respectively, with times of 16:50 and 16:52 in the boys’ race, while Schroeder and Egan placed ninth (15:25) and 10th (15:27) in the girls’ race.

Starting times for races at state are Division 3 boys (Amherst), 11 a.m.; Division 2 boys (Waupaca), 11:40 a.m.; Division 1 boys, 12:20 p.m.; Division 1 boys (Hortonville and New London), 12:20 p.m.; Division 3 girls, 1 p.m.; Division 2 girls (Clintonville), 1:40 p.m.; and Division 1 girls (New London), 2:20 p.m.

Here’s a rundown of sectional and conference meet results:

Freedom Sectional

Waupaca’s other finishers in the boys’ race were 79, Jeff Servey 79th (20:04); Adam Biba, 83rd (20:17); and Logan Ader, 107th (22:03). The Waupaca girls’ team placed 13th. Finishers were Taylor Fabricius, 37th (16:50); Autumn Schultz, 60th (17:35); Kathern Haen, 66th (17:43); Taylor Davidson, 75th (17:58); and Abbey Lazers, 84th (18:21).

The Weyauwega-Fremont boys and girls each finished 13th and 12th, respectively. Placing for the boys were Corey Zeutzius, 36th (18:02); Nick Thomas, 57th (18:47); Graham Young, 75th (19:57); Jake Kuenzi, 78th (20:12); and James Hoch, 79th (20:15). Placing for the girls were Alyse Peters, 43rd (16:58); Jane Beyer, 48th (17:12); Ellen Schroeder, 50th (17:15); Aysia Schroeder, 77th (18:09); and Arianna Schmitz, 88th (18:31).

Athens Sectional

Iola-Scandinavia competed in the Athens Sectional. The boys placed sixth, while the girls were fourth. Placing for the boys were Derek Peterson, 18th (18:14); John Faldet, 23rd (18:25); Ben Hoffman, 28th (18:38); Ryan Przybylski, 34th (18:52); and Tamas Peterson, 40th (19:08). Placing for the girls were Emily Sether, ninth (16:41); Natalie Gauerke, 25th (17:44); Lindsey Wogsland, 27th (17:48); Ellen Oligney, 31st (17:56); and Leah Pierce, 38th (18:09).

EVC Meet

Freedom won boys’ and girls’ championships at the Eastern Valley Conference Meet Saturday, Oct. 16, at Irish Waters Golf Club. The Comet boys and girls were ninth.

Wheeler placed second in the boys’ race in 16:36. Other finishers for the boys were Biba, 55th (20:18); Zach Wright, 56th (22:23); Ader, 57th (23:14); and Shawn Adkins, 58th (23:33).

Fabricius led the Waupaca girls by finishing 30th in 17:11. Other finishers were Schultz, 37th (17:30); Haen, 44th (17:41); Davidson, 45th (17:42); and Lazers, 46th (17:44).

CWC Meet

The I-S and W-F boys placed second and fifth, respectively, Thursday, Oct. 14, at the CWC Meet in Keshena. The W-F girls placed second and the I-S girls were third.

Placing for the I-S boys were Hoffman, seventh (17:20); Derek Peterson, 14th (18:01); Przybylski, 21st (18:22); Faldet, 24th (18:26); and Tamas Peterson, 27th (18:37).

Placing for the W-F boys were Zeutzius, 12th (17:58); Thomas, 13th (17:59); Tony Austreng, 30th (19:06); Young, 35th (19:20); and Kuenzi, 39th 919:56).

Placing for the I-S girls were Sether, sixth (15:38); Gauerke, 13th (16:37); Wogsland, 14th (16:37); Oligney, 22nd (17:17); and Pierce, 25th (17:30).

Placing for the W-F girls were Peters, eighth (15:51); Jenni Hellweg, ninth (15:53); Beyer, 10th (16:15); Ellen Schroeder, 11th (16:19) and Aysia Schroeder, 21st, 17:12).
