T-Bird swim team always looking for new members

The Iola-Scandinavia Thunderbird swim team will begin its winter season Monday, Nov. 29.

The season will last for nine weeks and will included an invitational in Stevens Point Saturday, Jan. 29. Registration began Monday, Oct. 25.

The competitive team for boys and girls ages 5-18 is open to all ability levels, according to coach Dick Wright.

“Most of our kids are from the Iola-Scandinavia area, but we have a very large group from Amherst and many swimmers from Waupaca,” he said. “We welcome swimmers from anywhere in the area. We are always looking for new kids of any age and ability to join our team.”

Last winter’s team included about 60 swimmers and Wright expects the same number this season.

Practices are held from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the Iola-Scandinavia Community Fitness & Aquatic Center in Iola, with meets held Saturdays. Swimmers are grouped according to ability and age for practices. The winter season includes three away invitationals and three home meets in Iola.

“We have been going for nine years now and have built a strong team,” Wright said. “We have several experienced assistant coaches are looking forward to another great season for our swimmers.”
