Viking dubbed Vidar

“Vidar of Iola” is the name of the Nordic Viking carving in downtown Iola.

The announcement was made by Iola Village President Joel Edler at the Iola-Scandinavia (I-S) Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Silver Lake Lanes in Scandinavia.

Vidar (vee-dar) is “tree warrior” or “lumberjack” in Norwegian, according to Name the Nordic Viking Contest winner Maggie Jones. She found Vidar while researching possible Norwegian names on the Internet.

The name was chosen by the I-S Chamber and Hometown Committee at a closed meeting Oct. 28.

Present for the official announcement was Buzzsaw Bob, the chain saw artist who carved the sculpture.

In other business, Greg Loescher was named president of the I-S Chamber and Brenda Mazemke was elected secretary. Continuing as chamber officers are Vice President Mark Hurt and Treasurer Molly Vold.

The Iola Lioness have asked the chamber to provide a float to carry Santa in the Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 4. Needed is a trailer and a location to decorate the float.

A Family Fun Night is planned for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the I-S Community Fitness & Aquatic Center.
