Sex crime charges filed

Brett A. Wolberg, 22, Scandinavia, was charged Dec. 3 with multiple sex crimes.

He faces felony charges of sexual assault of a child, child enticement, sexual exploitation of a child, possession of child pornography, causing a child to view sexually explicit material and a misdemanor charge of exposing himself.

On March 15, 2009, Detective Sgt. John Mocadlo, with the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department, began investigating a complaint against Wolberg. He was informed that Wolburg had purchased nude photos from a local teenaged boy.

On March 22, 2009, Mocadlo spoke with the teen’s mother. She gave him a copy of letter that Wolberg apparently sent to her son. The letter made reference to a relationship between Wolberg and the boy.

On March 25, 2009, Mocadlo met with the alleged victim. He said that he and Wolberg had sexual contact more than 20 times between September 2006, when he was age 14, and May 2008, when he was 15.

The teen also accused Wolberg of giving him money, CDs, cigarettes and other things in exchange for sex. Wolberg also allegedly showed the boy sexually explicit photos.

On March 31, 2009, Mocadlo and Iola Police Chief Robert Prahl executed a search warrant at Wolberg’s home in the village of Scandinavia. They seized a computer and a cell phone and took Wolberg into custody for questioning.

According to the criminal complaint, Wolberg told investigators that he and the teen were friends, but denied having sexual relations with him.

When asked about giving money to the boy, Wolberg reportedly replied, “I would leave money in my car for him just because he was a nice guy.”

Wolberg also admitted to giving the teen a cell phone, according to investigators.

Wolberg’s computer and cell phone were sent to the State Crime Lab.

In May 2010, Mocadlo received a CD from the State Crime Lab with 35 images and a movie copied from Wolberg’s computer, according to the criminal complaint.

The teen identified some of the images as being of himself in the nude. Police reported that there was also a pornographic movie that had been downloaded to the computer which the boy said he had previously viewed while visiting Wolberg.

Wolberg faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of sexual assault of a child or exploitation of a child and up to 25 years if convicted of possession of child pornography or child enticement.
