WMS presents holiday concerts

Middle school students will present two holiday concerts.

Sixth-grade students will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, at Waupaca Middle School.

The choir will begin the program with a variety of songs from Christmas and holidays around the world. The pieces include “Christmas is in the Air”, a medley of favorite carols, “Bonse Aba,” a Zambian celebration song, “Jubilate Deo!,” sung in Latin, “Candlelight Song” to celebrate Hanukkah, and a light-hearted rendition of “Jingle Bells” called “Solfege Santa.”

The middle school vocal jazz group “FIZZ” will also perform and showcase its sixth grade members.

The choirs are under the direction of Laurel Leder and accompanied by Barb Kirk. Members of the band, under the direction of Shana Rogney, will also help with instrumentation.

The sixth-grade band will take to the stage next sto perform “Christmas in the Kitchen,” “Two Sunset Sketches,” “March Ahead,” “First Christmas March,” “Holiday Array,” and “Jingle Bells.” The student musicians are under the direction of Greg Biba and Shana Rogney.

The seventh- and eighth-grade bands will perform their holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16.

Performing under Shana Rogney, the seventh-grade band will perform “Legend of the Alhambra,” “Santa at the Symphony,” “All Through the Silent Night,” “African Bell Carol,” and “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch.”

When the eighth-grade band takes the stage under the baton of Greg Biba, they will perform “Noel,” arranged by Todd Stalter; “The 3-Minute Nutcracker,” a take on Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker arranged by Lloyd Conley; “Variants on a Shaped Note Tune” by Johnnie Vinson, and “Christmas Swings,” also arranged by Johnnie Vinson.

The final song of the concert will feature all the members of the bands playing Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”

The concerts are free and open to the public. The auditorium doors open at 7:05 p.m.
