Playing six-end games with at least one “rookie” ( first-year curler) or player who has never curled and a novice skip will be the format for the Waupaca Curling Club’s second annual Rookie Bonspiel, set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4.

Chairmen Chris Schultz and Jon Peotter hope to involve people in our community who have always wanted to try curling and invite anyone interested in joining the fun to call either chairman to be placed on a team. Food and refreshments will be served with a fish boil slated for Friday evening. The fee for the three-game spiel is $20.00 per curler. After curling games are completed Saturday evening, music will be provided for dancing.

Tom Okray’s team from Stevens Point won the first event trophy this past weekend at the Waupaca Men’s Bonspiel, which featured 23 teams in four events.

The Okray team also included Jack Edgerton, Brent Bednarek and Nate Hordyk. The Wausau team of Howie Fischer, Chris Horak, Scott Stensberg and Perry Grueber was the runner-up in the first event.

Green Bay’s Nathan Jackson, Dennis Hibray, Joe Williams and Gary Linders defeated the St. Paul, Minn./Waupaca team of Tom Hartman, Neil Wenberg, Jim Taylor and Craig Wenberg to win the second event.

The Madison team of Dean Zoesch, Bob and Wes Cuomo and Jim Stephens defeated Waupaca’s Jason Smith, Ryan Johnston, Luke Hansen and Nigel Bousfield to win the third event.

The Stevens Point team of Ian Journeaux, Dave Carlson, Bill Ehlert and Ken Spatola defeated Wauwatosa’s Mike Zimmerman, Bill Christensen, Jason Platek and Andrew Bergersen to win the fourth event.
