Wendt, Jane

Jane Wendt, Age 90, was taken to her eternal home on Saturday, January 15, 2011. She was born March 16,1920 at home in the Township of Caledonia, Waupaca County, daughter of the late Albert and Amanda (Pommerening) Gorges. She lived in the New London area all her life. Jane graduated from Washington High School in 1937. Following graduation, she attended Outagamie Teachers Rural Normal School in Kaukauna.Jane then taught at Elm School on Bean City Road, a rural country school south of New London, for three years. On December 22, 1941 she married Wallace Wendt at St. John’s Lutheran Church in the township of Caledonia. They farmed for nearly 40 years west of New London on Jennings Road. During that time Jane raised and guided their 6 children in the one true Christian faith having daily devotions. She enjoyed gardening, canning several hundred quarts of fruit and vegetables, cooking, baking, making and frosting cut-out cookies with family, playing cards with neighbors, relatives, friends and family, and being a 4-H leader. She was a faithful member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid in which she was President. She worked many years in the candy booth at the church bazaar, was a member of the Wolf River Toastmistress Club and Oak Grove Homemakers. She and Wallace delivered Meals on Wheels and were volunteer drivers for Waupaca County. They enjoyed traveling, visiting 48 states including Alaska and Hawaii, and the Holy Land. After they retired, they spent many winters in Florida. Jane always enjoyed visiting, attending activities and receiving letters from her children, grandchildren, great-grand children and friends. Jane is survived by three sons, Jim (Jeanne), Wheaton, Illinois; Gary (Claire), Flagstaff, Arizona; Steve (Loni), Waupun; and three daughters, Carol (Fred) Schulze, Caledonia, Minnesota; Vera (Herb) Weathers, Charlotte, North Carolina; Donna (Jim) Michalkiewicz, Appleton. Jane is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 3 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband Wallace, parents, brother Marshall & his wife Shirley Gorges, sister Helen Gorges, granddaughter Bonnie Michalkiewicz, and step-granddaughter, Melissa Hanson. A Christian funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 200 E. Quincy Street, New London, with Rev. Brian Hennig officiating. Burial will be in the Floral Hill Cemetery, New London. Friends may call directly at the church Saturday from 9:00 am until time of service. Jane asked that everyone be happy at her funeral because she’s in Heaven with loved ones and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s Residence and Community Care for all their help and direction.
