Hockey team wins three in a row

Tyler Donaldson’s goal in overtime lifted the Waupaca Comet hockey team to a 4-3 nonconference win Monday, Jan. 24, over DePere.

The Comets also handed Stevens Point Pacelli a 6-3 defeat Thursday, Jan. 20, and picked up a 5-2 Great Northern Conference win Tuesday, Jan. 18, in Antigo.

Waupaca 4, DePere 3 (OT)

DE PERE – The Comets outscored the Voyageurs 2-0 in the first period, but the home team scored three times in the second and the teams entered the third period tied at 3-3.

Donaldson scored twice for Waupaca and added an assist. Bjorn Asher chipped in with a goal and an assist; Jordan Erickson scored a goal; and Hunter Vezina and Beau Ash had an assist apiece.

Waupaca outshot DePere 50-25.

Waupaca 6, Pacelli 3

Asher and Donaldson each had a hat trick in the Comets’ win over the Cardinals at the Waupaca Expo Center.

Both players scored once in each period.

The Comets led 2-0 heading into the second period, but Pacelli cut the lead to 3-2. Donaldson’s second goal gave Waupaca a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.

Asher assisted three goals, while Donaldson, Marcus Johnson, Cooper Flesch and Natasha Smith also earned an assist.

The Comets outshot the Cardinals 33-24.

Iola’s Brady Huettner, Pacelli’s goalie, finished with 27 saves.

Two other I-S players, Andrew and Sam Bauer, also suit up for Pacelli.

Waupaca 5, Antigo 2

ANTIGO – Donaldson scored 35 seconds into the game off of an assist from Johnson and added two other scores in the Comets’ win over the Red Robins.

Caleb Stolzman tied the game with 2:40 remaining in the first period with a short-handed goal, but Donaldson struck again 11:24 into the second period with a power play goal off of assists from Johnson and Ash. Stolzman tied the game at 2-2 with a goal with 39 seconds to go in the period.

Jared Erickson gave Waupaca the lead for good 3:23 into the third period off of assists from Ash and Asher. Asher found the net less than two minutes later off of an assist from Donaldson and Donaldson picked up the hat trick with an empty net goal with 2:04 remaining in the game off of Erickson’s assist.

The Comets outshot the Red Robins 37-28.

Waupaca will return to Great Northern Conference competition at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, against Northland Pines at the Waupaca Expo Center. The Comets will also travel to Medford for a 7 p.m. GNC game Tuesday, Feb. 1.
