Curns, Eileen B.

Eileen B. Curns, age 83, of New London and formerly from the Chicago area, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the New London Family Medical Center. She was born on May 22, 1927 in Chicago, daughter of the late Alvin and Lorraine (White) Bohan and grew up there. After graduating from De Paul University, she married and had two children. In 1963, the family went to Brazil and spent a year working at a medical clinic for the poor. After their return to the U.S., Eileen was involved in local civic events. She corresponded with Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk, and typed some of his manuscripts. She loved music and the arts and enjoyed painting and sculpting. After her divorce in 1974, she went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education Counseling from Loyola University. She developed and published stress materials and had a counseling practice. Eileen enjoyed nature and gardening and shared these with her grandchildren whom she visited quite often. She is survived by a daughter Barbara (Gary) Obrokta, Maple Park, IL; son Jim (Cathie) Curns, New London; grandchildren Julia, Steve, Jessica and Alyssa; a great-grandson Ben; sister Marilyn Burgaard, Las Vegas, NV. She is further survived by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. The funeral service for Eileen will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cline & Hanson Funeral Home in New London. Friends may call directly at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
