Fuhrmann, Eugene

Eugene Ethelmer “Bud” Fuhrmann, 92, departed this life on March 19, 2011. Bud was born in New London, WI, on August 27, 1918, eldest son of Lucile Maurer and Ethelmer “Pete” Fuhrmann (deceased). He lived part of his childhood in Milwaukee. He attended New London Elementary School and Washington High School. He married the love of his life and devoted life partner, Jane Huebner (Fuhrmann) on September 27, 1941. He was a veteran of U.S. Naval Service from 1942-44; much of it served in Norfolk, VA. After returning from service, he continued working as production supervisor for American Plywood until 1955. He retired as an underwriter for Aid Associations for Lutherans in 1980. He and his wife prepared taxes for over 50 years until 2001. He was a loving family man, devoted to the support, education and independence of his and Jane’s children. He selflessly served his church as a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran School Board, Church Governing Board and Men’s Club. He served the New London community as appointed Unified School District Board member from 1963-74, including chairman from 1968-72, during which the High School (now Middle School) and Parkview Elementary Schools were constructed without incurring public debt; and he served on the New London Utility commission for many years. He served on the committee that established the New London Public swimming pool. He was a member of the Lions Club and accompanied Jane to her many state Woman’s Club events. After his retirement in 1980, Jane and he regularly traveled to California, Texas and Virginia to visit their son and daughters and their families; and to Florida, visiting New London “snowbird” relatives. In retirement, he and Jane delivered Meals-on-Wheels for 13 years. He was deeply committed to leaving this world a better place for those that follow; believed that saving for both public investment and private purchases was preferable to borrowing; and enjoyed serving others and being with family and neighbors. Survivors include: his devoted, loving wife of 69 years, Jane; one son, Steven (Louise Hudgins) of Charles City County, VA; two daughters, Susan Martin (Jim) of The Woodlands, TX and Sharon Ralston (Emerson) of Lodi, CA; four grandsons, Ian Martin (Maria) of Houston TX, Trevor Martin (Christin) of The Woodlands, TX, Justin Steingraber of Los Gatos, CA, and Collin Steingraber of Stockton, CA; two great-grandsons, Jack Steingraber and Elton Martin; one great-granddaughter, Beatrix Jane Martin, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his younger brother Donald “Red” Fuhrmann (Elda). He cared deeply for his family and the New London community and was happiest when busy working with others and improving the house and yard where he and Jane lived for 64 years, until his death. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, New London with Rev. Brian Hennig officiating. The family received friends at Cline & Hanson Funeral Home on Monday, March 21, 2011, from 4-7 p.m. and also at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Military Rites were held. Interment was in the Readfield Cemetery of Zion Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church building fund.
