Comets, Hawks split twinbill

WAUPACA – Waupaca and Appleton Xavier combined for 38 runs Monday, May 16, while splitting an Eastern Valley Conference doubleheader in Appleton.

Waupaca won the opener 18-6, while the Hawks won the nightcap 14-0. The Comets also fell to Stevens Point Pacelli 18-8 Saturday, May 14, and defeated Clintonville 8-5 Friday, May 13.

Waupaca 18, Xavier 6

APPLETON – Casey Nicewander had five hits and drove in three runs in the opener, as the Comets scored a run in the first and second, six in the fourth, three in the fifth and seven in the seventh.

Aaron Gooch had three hits for the Comets, while Josh Houtman picked up the win on the mound.

Xavier 14, Waupaca 0

APPLETON – An eight-run fourth inning helped the Hawks gain the split.

Xavier outhit the Comets 12-3 and Brandon Nowak took the loss on the mound.

Pacelli 18, Waupaca 8

WAUPACA – The Comets scored seven runs in the first three innings with two in the first, one in the second and four in the third, but Pacelli countered with five runs in the second and third and six more in the sixth.

Cody Zick took the loss for Waupaca.

Waupaca 8, Clintonville 5

CLINTONVILLE – Beau Ash’s single in the top of the seventh inning drove in the winning run.

Nicewander had three of the Comets’ 10 hits, while Ash and Broghan Cullen chipped in with two each. Joe Nelson got the win on the mound.

The Comets will host Little Chute at 4:45 p.m. Friday, May 20, before taking on Weyauwega-Fremont in a nonconference matchup at 4 p.m. Monday, May 23, at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. The teams will take the field following a Wisconsin Timber Rattlers game.
