Schuler named Volunteer of the Year

Elaine Schuler was honored as the Volunteer of the Year by the Clintonville Rotary Club at their meeting on Monday, May 23.

Schuler has assisted with delivering “Meals on Wheels” since 2002, while also volunteering her time to help organize the Community Meal and assists with American Legion Steak Fry events. Each year, she hosts a large group rummage sale where all profits go to “Relay for Life”. She also teachers water aerobics classes for senior citizens and is the costume designer and a member of the “Step-n-Sisters”, a local dance troupe that provides entertainment for nursing homes and assisted living residences. Schuler has also hosted Rotary Students in the past.

She is described by her peers as one of those “go to” people who are always willing to do extra things to help make life easier for those around her. She makes regular visits to those residents of Angelus who have little or no family in the area. She often takes those in need to medical appointments, even organizing carpool brigades to take people to a series of radiation treatments at Appleton Medical Center.

Schuler is the current president of Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators from the area who sponsor several service projects including providing scholarships for prospective teachers, providing books for newborns, and sponsoring local entries to a statewide literary contest. The chapter also sponsors informational meetings on such educational topics as autism.

Although church work is not a specific part of the Volunteer of the Year Award criteria, Schuler’s immense involvement at St. Rose on the Human Concerns Committee, providing communion to shut-ins, and visiting the sick, often falls outside the membership of St. Rose and leads to her many charitable activities.
