Last lap pass nets Anvelink third win

On a fast track, Nick Anvelink used a last lap pass to win his third WISSOTA Late Model feature of the year, while Jason Czarapata also won his third IMCA Modified feature of the year.

Harley Simon and Joey Taycher each got their first-ever feature wins at the Speedway in the IMCA Stock Car and IMCA Northern SportMod divisions, respectively. Justin Hirt won his first FASTRAK Late Model feature of the year.

Jeremie Hedrick quickly jumped out to the early lead over Nick Anvelink, Justin Ritchie, Troy Springborn and Gordie Seegert in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. It stayed that way until lap five when Ritchie’s car came to a stop in corner two. Hedrick continued to lead on the restart with Anvelink and Springborn in hot pursuit and Ron Berna and Doug Blashe following. Midway through the race Anvelink pulled alongside Hedrick for the lead but couldn’t make the pass.

Running the high side, Hedrick continued to hold off Anvelink, who was trying to make the bottom groove work. Anvelink continued to dog Hedrick for the next several laps but couldn’t make the pass, as the two were approaching a slower car with a few laps remaining. With the slower car racing the high side, Hedrick had to adjust his line. Entering corner one on the final lap Hedrick and Anvelink made contact as they both tried to maneuver around the slower car. Both recovered, but Anvelink took advantage of the opportunity to take the lead. Hedrick made one last effort to retake the lead in corner four, but it was Anvelink taking the win over Hedrick, Springborn, Berna and Blashe.

In the IMCA Modified feature, John Peters led the first two laps when Tom Schaal hit the concrete wall hard in corner one. Jerry Wilinski was ruled the cause of the accident and sent to the back on the restart. Peters continued to lead on the restart with Jason Czarapata, Michael Bailey, Marcus Yarie and Matt Oreskovich following. Oreskovich used a power move on the high side in corner one to grab the third spot on lap six, while Czarapata went for the lead on the backstretch on the next lap only to be fended off.

On lap 12 Peters hit the wall in corner one bringing out the caution. Czarpata inherited the lead on the restart with Yarie, Wilinski, Oreskovich and Tim Jorgenson following. Yarie headed to the pits with five laps remaining, giving Czarapata a large lead, and eventually the win over Oreksovich, Wilinski, Jorgenson and Eric Scribner.

Vern Stedjee led the first three laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature when he got crossed up in corner four allowing Harley Simon to grab the top spot. A couple of cautions came out on lap six. Simon maintained his lead on the restart with Stedjee, Devin Snellenberger, Greg Gutt and John Heinz following.

Midway through the race the top five cars were racing bumper-to-bumper with Simon still in the lead. With five laps remaining, Simon still led, but Gutt had made his way toward the front grabbing the second spot. Gutt began to gain on Simon and pulled up to his rear bumper heading into the final lap. Simon drifted high in corner four on the final lap, but hung on for the win over Gutt, Mitchell Stankowski, Snellenberger and Heinz.

Joey Taycher took the lead in the IMCA Northern SportMod feature after a lap four restart. A couple of cautions slowed the race during the next couple laps. Taycher maintained his lead on the restart with Clint Forstner, Travis Van Straten, Cody Hudson and Tracy Wassenberg following. Taycher and Forstner engaged in a furious battle for the top spot over the next several laps with Taycher able to hold the lead.

Forstner regrouped and made another charge for the lead with two laps to go, but again couldn’t make the pass. On the final lap, Forstner tried ducking underneath Taycher in corners three and four but Taycher was up to the challenge, taking home the win. He was followed by Forstner, Van Straten, Hudson and Wassenberg.

Justin Hirt led all 20 laps of the FASTRAK Late Model feature and cruised to the win over Brett Swedberg, Joel Bennett, Dave Fieber and Aaron Holiday.

The Speedway will resume its season, Saturday, June 25, with the racing action getting underway at 6 p.m.
