Appleton Assassins win National Championship

The Appleton Assassins Guts Frisbee Team competed against 15 of the best teams in the country August 6-7 in Marquette, MI and became the youngest team ever to win the US National Championship.

This young team has been on the rise, having won the Wisconsin Guts Frisbee Championships in New London in June of 2010 and the Illinois Indoor Championships in April of this year. Other significant top finishes included 2nd place at the 2011 Wisconsin Guts Championships and 3rd place at the 54th International Frisbee Tournament, held in Calumet, MI.

The Assassins were undefeated in round robin and match play in advancing to the finals on Sunday. Amazing defense and blisteringly-fast offense was the standard they set early on Saturday and carried with them throughout the weekend.

Team Roster (Age):

Josh Tews, Team Captain (15), Alex Tews (18), Adam Swanson (18), John Luedke (18), Mike Toll (18), Shane Mattingly (18), Tim Trauger (54).

In a surprise roster shift during the final two-out-of-three-games match against hometown favorites O’Malley’s Alley (Marquette, MI), Assassin’s center Shane Mattingly replaced John Luedke at the end position. Alex Tews said later, “If Shane had insisted on playing the middle, I don’t know how it would have ended up. John and Shane both played amazing Guts at totally new positions. This was the strongest lineup we’ve ever had.”

The Assassins have been playing in the Men’s Division at Guts Frisbee tournaments four seasons. They will compete next in Sterling Heights, MI over Labor Day weekend in hopes of winning the tournament and earning the right to represent the United States at the World Ultimate and Guts Frisbee Championships in Osaka, Japan in July of 2012.

The Appleton Assassins are sponsored in part by the Fox Cities Frisbee Club. The Fox Cities Frisbee Club is dedicated to the promotion of Guts Frisbee and disc sports in the Fox Valley and around the Midwest. David Trauger, club president, is a New London graduate.
