Austin, Robert R. (Augie)

Robert R. (Augie) Austin, Waupaca, age 60 – died on Saturday August 27, 2011 at the Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on June 21, 1951 in Iola, WI, the son of Robert and Viona (Nicolaisen) Salter. He married Julie Ann Thompson on December 27, 2009 in Waupaca. Augie is survived by his wife; Julie Ann Austin, sons; Gregory (Nikki) Austin and Wesley (Erika) Austin both of Waupaca, step children; Robert (Melissa) Wierzchowski of Ft. Campbell, KY, Kristina (Andrew) Wierzchowski of Appleton, and Eric Wierzchowski of Waupaca, grandchildren; Hannah Jo Austin, Landon Christopher Austin, twins; Sierrah and Miranda Wierzchowski, and Jaxson Jones, his mother; Viona Austin of Waupaca, and sisters; Christine Schultz of Waupaca, Lori (Don) Gerber of Madison, and Lisa (Matt Ranscht) Austin of Theresa. Augie is further survived by two nephews; Nick and Matt Schultz. He was preceded in death by his fathers; Robert Salter and Bill Austin, his grandparents, and numerous other relatives. Augie had attended Riverside High School in Milwaukee and then spent three years at UW – Milwaukee before moving to Waupaca. He was very active as a community volunteer in Waupaca, and a mentor to many people. He was very active in sports his entire lifetime having been a longtime player and President of the Waupaca Lakemen Baseball team, a Waupaca High School freshman basketball coach and an assistant varsity basketball coach for many years. He was the coordinator of the Waupaca youth baseball and basketball programs for many years. He had been an active participant in the Waupaca City Recreational basketball, softball, and volleyball leagues. He had also played in the B.A.B.A. basketball league. He was a member of the Waupaca Parks and Recreation board for 25 years. Augie was a loyal employee of the Pepsi Cola Company for over 30 years, working in Waupaca, Oshkosh, and Wisconsin Rapids. He had attended both the Trinity Lutheran Church and Faith Community Church in Waupaca. He became a friend to anyone he met. He was a very wonderful and devoted husband, father, and grandfather and his very best times were the times he spent with family. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 2, 2011 at Noon at the Waupaca Recreation Center (Hendrickson Center), 407 School St. in Waupaca, WI. A visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 3:00 – 8:00 PM & again on Friday from 10:00 – Noon at the Waupaca Recreation Center. Interment will be in Lakeside Memorial Park Cemetery in Waupaca, WI. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in the name of Robert R. (Augie) Austin. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
