Skagen, Velda

Velda (Handrich) Skagen, age 88 of Roswell, GA, was called to her eternal home on August 30, 2011. Her death followed a long courageous battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. She was preceded in death by her husband, John O. Skagen in 1985, her parents, Alvin A. and Erna Handrich and her only brother, Rolland C. Handrich. Velda was born September 12, 1922 in Manawa, Wisconsin, graduated from Little Wolf High School, Manawa, and Oshkosh Business College, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She was an executive secretary for many years. She was a member of Cross of Life Lutheran Church, Roswell, the Roswell Historical Society, Brookfield Country Club, Thimble Collectors International and the Georgia Dogwood Thimblers. Velda was honored with the Washington, D.C. award in 2000 at the Orlando, Florida biennial TCI convention for designing the Thimble Collectors International logo. This logo is still used worldwide today. Velda is survived by two daughters; Judith Skagen of Shorewood, Wisconsin, Karen Hiller (Chip) of Alpharetta, three granddaughters, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A memorial celebration of life service will be held at Cross of Life Lutheran Church, 1000 Hembree Road, Roswell, GA. 30076 on September 17, 2011 at 11:00AM. Interment will be at the Little Wolf Cemetery, Manawa, Wisconsin. A memorial fund has been established at Cross of Life Lutheran Church or contributions may be made to any charity of choice. Northside Chapel Funeral Directors and Crematory of Roswell, GA. are in charge of the arrangements.
