Readers seek to break world record

Dragonwings Bookstore is inviting area families to help break a world record for the largest shared reading experience in history.

On Oct. 6, children and adults across the country and around the globe will be reading Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney in an attempt to break the record set last year by just over 2 million readers in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record literacy campaign.

To participate in this year’s Read-o-Rama, families can sign a pledge at readfortherecord.com to read Llama Llama Red Pajama at home, they can attend a Llama Llama Storytime at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Dragonwings Bookstore, or they can visit the store anytime on October 6th to read the book as part of Dragonwings’ pledge group.

Copies of the book will be available to read at Dragonwings, and Llama Llama dolls will be given away with any Llama Llama book purchase including the latest release Llama Llama Home with Mama. On Oct. 6, Dragonwings Bookstore will also visit the Waupaca Pre-school to read to a class of 18 students.

The first Read for the Record campaign was launched in 2006 to raise awareness of Jumpstart’s literacy efforts. Each year since then Americans have joined together to break the world record by reading classic stories.
