Molten iron sculpting at Originals

Sculptor Teresa Lind will be artist in residence at Originals etc. Gallery, 204 N. Main St., from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20.

Her visit is part of afterhours events at the gallery and the Waupaca Community Arts Center in downtown Waupaca.

Along with a crew of six others, Lind will build a cupola in front of the gallery.

The cupola consists of a cylinder with a tap hole where the molten iron comes out, a slag hole, where the impurities in the metal come out, and a couple of tuyeres where the airflow enters the furnace and keeps the metal hot.

They will pour the molten iron to cast tiles customers have designed using scratch blocks. Scratch blocks are made of resin bonded sand and are easy to carve. The cost per block is $15.

Lind has master’s of fine arts degree in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She also attended the Florence Academy of Art in Italy.

In 2010, Lind was invited to the Palazzo Rinaldi Artists’ Residency program in Noepoli, Italy. Her teaching experience includes UW-Oshkosh, Peninsula School of Art, Carroll College, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Parkside.

Among the awards Lind has received are the Indianapolis Art Center National Iron Symposium Exhibition Award in 2010 and the Wisconsin Visual Artists Biennial Award in 2009.
