LeVerne E. “Popeye” Siewert, age 81, of Readfield, died on Friday, October 28, 2011 at St. Joseph Residence in New London. He was born on July 3, 1930, in the Town of Caledonia, the son of the late Ewald and Esther (Miller) Siewert. On July 14, 1979, Popeye married Mavis Griswold in Readfield. He was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Readfield. Popeye worked as a constable for the Town of Caledonia for 27 years, and also as a special deputy for Waupaca County Sherriff’s Department. Popeye farmed for Neumandale Farms for many years. In 1983, he opened Popeye’s Custom Meats and Butcher Shop, where he was the owner and operator until 1997. He was a founder of the Readfield Gun Club, and loved trap-shooting. Popeye also served as the sexton for Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Readfield for many years. He loved going to the cabin in Newald, WI, where he enjoyed hunting for over 65 years. Popeye is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mavis; and their children, Timothy (Renee) Griswold, West Bend; Debra Griswold, Germantown, WI; James (Corinne) Griswold, Milwaukee; and Terry Griswold, New London; four grandchildren, Erin and Chad McLaughlin, and Jessica and Jennifer Griswold; a step-sister, Betty Forester, Appleton; a step-brother, Kent Pribbernow, Appleton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Popeye was preceded in death by a grandson, Clint Griswold. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, N985 County Rd. W, Readfield. Rev. Paul Zittlow officiated. Burial is in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation was held on Sunday, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Lewin Funeral Home, Fremont and on Monday at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of service. A memorial fund has been established. Popeye’s family would like to extend a very special Thank You to the first floor nursing staff at St. Joe’s, as well as the Heartland Hospice staff for their loving care. They also wish to thank Donald and Laurie Fischer, and their family for all of the love and caring help.
