W-F juniors seek off-campus prom

Next spring’s Weyauwega-Fremont High School junior prom might be held at a different site.

The junior class wants to hold it at the Channel Cats Events Center in Fremont instead of in the old middle school building in Weyauwega – as it has been.

Representatives of the class brought their request before the school board on Nov. 28.

But, before the school district’s administrators give it their approval, the students have a bit of homework to do.

District Administrator Scott Bleck said the school board asked that High School Principal Matt Wilbert, along with the prom advisers, assist the students in talking with the owners of Channel Cats about how prom would be set up at that location.

“It is a school-sponsored event,” Bleck said. “We have to uphold its integrity.”

That is why Fremont Police Chief Gene Goode will also be weighing in on the idea to make sure he does not have any concerns.

Bleck said if the students can meet those two prerequisites, the event will probably be booked at Channel Cats.

If it is held in Fremont, it will be in the event center’s hall.

“It is not uncommon for junior proms to be held off campus,” Bleck said. “Different schools do it different ways.”
