Comet girls notch first win

The new year started out on a positive note for the Waupaca girls’ basketball team.

The Comets picked up their first win of the season, a 68-53 Eastern Valley Conference decision Tuesday, Jan. 3, over Ripon.

Waupaca led 11-9 after one quarter, 29-19 at halftime and 51-35 after three quarters.

Mikayla Johnson led the Comets with 20 points, while Katie Barlow added 16 and Lexie Marringa finished with 11 before leaving the game late in the fourth quarter with an injury.

Taylor VanderPlas led Ripon with 31 points, including 20 in the second half.

Waupaca traveled to Clintonville Friday, Jan. 6, for an EVC matchup with the Truckers and will host Freedom at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12.
