W-F girls win over T-Birds

A little long ball and a little inside game added up to another win for the Weyauwega-Fremont girls’ basketball team.

The Indians hit seven three-pointers in the first three quarters and were able to get the ball inside to post player Jenni Hellweg in the second half Friday, Feb. 10, in a 51-34 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference win over Iola-Scandinavia.

The Thunderbirds were able to stick with the Indians for much of the first half, as the T-Birds led 14-13 after one quarter and trailed 29-25 at halftime.

W-F began to pull away in the second half while holding the T-Birds to four points in the third quarter and five in the fourth.

“The girls did a really good job bringing the intensity level up in the second half,” coach Joe Titus said. “They responded well to some things against their 2-3 zone, which we were having some problems with right out of the gate. We did a really good job of moving the ball around, hitting key shots and getting it down into our post.”

Hellweg scored 11 of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, while teammate Ellen Schroeder finished with 11. Jane Oligney led I-S with 16 points, while Paige Berg and Brooke Phillips led the way with six rebounds each and Phillips chipped in with five assists.
