Jome, Hattie Mary

Hattie Mary Jome, age 94 of Appleton, formerly of Waupaca, passed away on March 4, 2012. Hattie was born April 2, 1917 in Nasewaupee Township, Door County. She grew up in Door County and graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1935. Hattie earned a teacher’s license from the Door-Kewaunee Normal School. She taught school in Door County until she married Walton D. Jome, October 24, 1942. She and her husband lived in New Jersey for 2 years until he was sent to the European Theater during WWII. After the war they moved back to Door County where she again taught until a business transfer moved the family to Waupaca, Wisconsin. While earning baccalaureate and masters degrees in Education from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, Hattie taught school in the Waupaca area for 25 years. In 1993, Hattie and Walt moved to Oshkosh due to her husband’s health. Surviving members of the family are her children: daughter Mary Barker and her husband Joel Edson of Oshkosh, daughter Barbara Rowland and husband Richard of Appleton and son Robert Jome of Iola; two grandchildren, Steve Seul of Waupaca (and friend Raquel Bohn) and Michelle Rigden and husband Pat of Milwaukee and two very special great grandchildren, Jacen and Alexis. Also surviving is a sister, Anne Coisman, Brownsville, Texas; in-laws Herbert Peterson and Jean Jome of Door County along with many nieces and nephews. Hattie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years who died December 22, 2000, her grandson Michael Barker, her parents Charles and Barbara (Siedl) Brandl, in-laws: Bernice and Henry Kolstad, Kermit and Esther Jome, Florence and Sigurd Melland, Lorraine and Gabe Kerscher, Agnes and Franklin Jome, Sylvester Jome, Isalbelle Peterson and Harry Coisman. Hattie enjoyed her 35 years of teaching and had great memories of the students she taught. She was a life member of the Wisconsin Education Association, the VFW Auxiliary in Waupaca, and the Riverside Medical Center Auxiliary. She was proud of being one of the creators of the Lights of Love event that is still active today. Hattie enjoyed cooking, baking, caring for flowers, multiple arts and crafts projects especially drawing and was an avid reader. The family would like to extend thanks to the staff and residents at Fox River Assisted Living in Appleton, the ER Physician at Theda Clark, Dr. Duscher, and the Theda Clark ER and 5th floor Staff for their care and compassion. Funeral services will be held at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca on Friday March 9, 2012 at 1 P.M. Father Jim Vennix will officiate. Burial will be held at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca from 11:30 A.M. until the time of the service at 1 P.M. on Friday.
