Two vacant spots on Manawa ballot

Manawa residents in Aldermanic District 3 will find two vacant spots on the ballot when they go to the polls on Tuesday, April 3.

Joel Bonikowski and Lincoln O’Brien currently hold those seats, but neither filed papers to be placed on the ballot for the upcoming election.

City of Manawa Clerk Cheryl Hass said residents in District 3 will be able to write in candidates. The person who receives the majority of the votes for each seat will win. Each will then be contacted and asked if they would be interested in serving on the city council in the seats. If they say yes, then they will get the seats.

If one or both who receive the most votes for each seat is not interested in the seat, the city council can not automatically ask the person receiving the second most votes, Hass said.

“They have to go through a process of putting it out to the public and asking them and try to get somebody to appoint,” Hass said.

Hass said she is not aware of anybody who is running as a write-in candidate for either seat.
