Comets score 29 runs in one game

WAUPACA – After opening the season with three straight conference wins, the Waupaca Comet softball team fell to Freedom and split a pair of games at its invitational.

Menasha 5, Waupaca 3

WAUPACA – The teams went into the eighth inning tied at 3-3 after Menasha scored three runs in the top of the first inning and the Comets came up with three of their own in the bottom of the seventh.

Katie Barlow had two of Waupaca’s five hits, including a double. Jessica Borntrager also doubled.

Waupaca 4, Rhinelander 3

WAUPACA – The Comet defense helped preserve the win over the Hodags, as Waupaca threw out a pair of runners at home in the bottom of the seventh.

Freedom 14, Waupaca 1

FREEDOM – Waupaca didn’t have an answer for Freedom pitcher Bri Garvey, who held the Comets to one hit over six innings.

The game ended in the bottom of the sixth on Emily Burton’s grand slam.

Emerie Vasquez took the loss on the mound.

Waupaca 29, Clintonville 2

WAUPACA – Waupaca led 13-0 after three innings and put the game out of reach with 16 more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Natasha Smith and Mandy Tomlinson led the Comets at the plate with four and three hits, respectively, while Vasquez pitched a five-hitter to get the win.

Waupaca hosted Little Chute Tuesday, April 17, and will play a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Appleton Xavier.
