Pacelli, T-Birds combine for 43 runs

It isn’t often that a softball team can put 20 runs on the scoreboard and not come out with a win.

That’s exactly what happened to Iola-Scandinavia, as the Thunderbirds came out on the short end of a 23-20 score Thursday, April 12, in a Central Wisconsin 8 Conference matchup with Stevens Point Pacelli.

The T-Birds also split a pair of games Saturday, April 14, at the Stratford Invitational and picked up a 10-6 win Tuesday, April 10, over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Pacelli 23, I-S 20

IOLA – Pacelli jumped out to an 18-1 lead after its fourth at-bat, but the T-Birds battled back to within one run, 21-20, heading into the seventh inning.

Unfortunately, Pacelli added two more runs and the T-Birds went down quietly in the bottom of the seventh inning in a game that lasted more than 2 1/2 hours.

I-S had 11 hits and took advantage of 12 walks to get back into the game. Kylie Johnson had three hits, including a two-run double in the fourth. Whitney Tomczak and Jane Oligney added two hits each. Tomczak’s single in the fifth inning drove in two runs and Brooke Phillips added a run-scoring triple in the fifth.

Payton Erickson pitched the first 2 2/3 innings and the final inning in taking the loss, while Phillips and Karina Welch also pitched for the T-Birds. Erickson allowed two walks while striking out one batter; Phillips pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed four walks and had one strikeout; and Welch had no walks or strikeouts in two innings of work.

Pacelli outhit the T-Birds 25-11.

I-S 12, Stratford 2

STRATFORD – The T-Birds added to their 3-2 lead with nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game.

After trailing 2-0 early, the T-Birds scored to cut the lead to 2-1, as Welch doubled to score Jane Oligney, who had reached on an error.

I-S took a 3-2 lead in the third after Elle Maus was hit by a pitch and scored on an Oligney double. Oligney scored on Welch’s fielder’s choice.

The nine-run fifth inning started with a bang with Johnson’s leadoff home run. I-S had three more hits and took advantage of five walks. Welch singled and drove in her second run of the game and Phillips ended the game by driving in two runs with a double.

Erickson went the distance to earn the win. She allowed four hits and two walks while striking out one batter.

Antigo 12, I-S 10

STRATFORD – I-S was its own worst enemy in the championship game, as the T-Birds left 16 runners on base and committed four errors.

The T-Birds stranded two runners in the second, third, and fourth innings and left the bases loaded in each of the final three innings.

I-S built a 4-0 advantage through the top of the third inning. Antigo had eight hits and took advantage of five T-Bird errors to build a 12-5 lead, but I-S added five more runs in the sixth and seventh.

Phillips and Oligney had five and three hits, respectively. Phillips had a double and a triple, while Oligney added a double. Amanda Aasen chipped in with two hits.

Erickson took the loss and Phillips finished the game in the circle. Erickson pitched the first three innings and allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three batters. Phillips pitched the final three innings and allowed five hits and no walks and had four strikeouts.

I-S 10, W-B 6

IOLA – I-S outhit the Chargers 17-6.

Oligney and Johnson had four and three hits, respectively. Johnson had two doubles, while Kiara Boutwell, Phillips, Tomczak and Amanda Aanstad each had two hits. Boutwell drove in three runs and Phillips drove in a pair with a double and third-inning home run. Aanstad added two more runs with a fifth-inning double.

Erickson allowed six hits and three walks while striking out four batters to get the win.

Junior Varsity

I-S 11, W-B 6

WITTENBERG – The junior varsity came from behind by scoring 10 runs in the sixth and seventh innings for an 11-6 win over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Pitcher Brianne Huettner allowed only two hits and seven walks while striking out 10 batters. Huettner, Natasha Buster and Holly Boyle each had a hit.

I-S 14, Pacelli 9

STEVENS POINT – The T-Birds built a 12-1 lead, but had to hold on for a win over the Cardinals.

Huettner allowed five hits and seven walks while striking out 14 batters to get the win and added four hits, including a home run. Kjersti Aasen and Emily Ambrosius each had two hits, including a triple by Aasen, and Denisha Erno added a single.

The varsity team will host Amherst at 4:30 p.m. today (Thursday, April 19), while JV team will travel to Amherst.

Both teams will also play West Salem at Helfaer Field in Milwaukee Saturday, April 21, Helfaer Field is a historic Little League and softball field on the site of old Milwaukee County Stadium, next to Miller Park.

The JV team will play at 9 a.m. and the varsity team will take the field at 11 a.m. The teams will then attend the Milwaukee Brewers game in the evening.

The varsity and JV teams will play at Shiocton at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 23. The JV team will host a doubleheader against Manawa at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 24. The varsity team will also host Weyauwega-Fremont at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, while the JV team will travel to Weyauwega that day.
