Food drive helps local families

The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will be held on Saturday, May 12.

The Waupaca Post Office and post offices nationwide will participate in this largest one-day food collection event.

With high unemployment, record gasoline prices, budget cuts to federal nutrition programs, declines in food inventories at food banks, suspensions of school lunch programs over the summer months, and roughly 16% of all Americans at risk of hunger, this food drive could not have come at a better time.

In the coming days you may receive a postcard and/or a grocery bag with instructions about how you can help local families. On the morning of Saturday, May 12, place non-perishable items (avoid glass) on, in, or near your mailbox for you mail carrier to pick up. These items should be placed out by 9 AM or before your mail carrier normally arrives to pick up your mail. Participating post offices will also have volunteers to assist in collecting food donations.

The NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is an easy way for all of us to give back to our communities. Not only will it free up space in our cupboards, but also it will help out families at risk of hunger. Please consider donating food to your local food banks on Saturday, May 12.
