WHS recognized for hosting blood drives

Waupaca High School is the recipient of the Community Blood Center’s 2011 High School Blood Drive of the Year Western Region Award.

On April 19, Diane Beatty, the center’s donor recruitment specialist, presented the award to the officers of the high school’s National Honor Society.

The school’s NHS chapter sponsors and organizes the blood drive.

Each year, the Community Blood Center, of Appleton, recognizes a select number of sponsors for outstanding blood drive programs, Beatty said.

The criteria includes the number of blood drives held, the percentage of students who donate blood, number of new donors and the involvement of the service group.

Last school year, Waupaca High School hosted two blood drives. This year, the school hosted three, with the most recent one on April 26.

“Last year, with the two blood drives, they touched 369 lives, because with every donation, you have the opportunity to save three lives,” Beatty said.

In addition, WHS is part of the program that honors youth who donate a gallon of blood before they graduate from high school.

“We are so grateful,” she said, “for the support of the community and the support of NHS.”
