Communities observe Memorial Day

Memorial Day observances are scheduled for Monday, May 28, in Waupaca, King, Weyauwega, Fremont, Iola, Scandinavia and Ogdensburg.

Following are the schedules for each community:

Waupaca

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1037 will begin Memorial Day weekend with the placing of flags on veterans’ graves at 6 p.m. Friday, May 25, at Lakeside Cemetery in Waupaca.

If someone has a loved one who does not have a veterans flag marker on his grave, that person may get a marker at the Waupaca County Veterans Service office, which is located on the third floor of the Waupaca County Courthouse.

People may also contact a VFW member for assistance.

VFW Post 1037’s Memorial Day program will be held on Monday, May 28, at Rotary Riverview Park, behind Main Street.

The Ladies Auxiliary waterside ceremony will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the VFW program.

Those who can walk are asked to park on North Main Street and to use the ramp to get to the bandstand. Those who do not want to stand should bring their own chairs.

Two Waupaca High School students will be recognized with Good Citizenship Awards.

WHS students Zane Johnson and Kierstan Leaf will be the buglers for “Taps.”

Music will be provided by the Waupaca High School Band, under the direction of Mark Kryshak.

Wayne Knutson, who is the new Waupaca County Veterans Services officer, will share some thoughts about Memorial Day.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the Waupaca High School Performing Arts Center.

King

The Memorial Day program at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King will include lakeside services at 9:30 a.m. and cemetery services at 10 a.m.

Volunteers will arrive at the cemetery at 6 a.m. that day to set flags on more than 6,000 graves.

Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club will sponsor a picnic and musical entertainment in the park from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Weyauwega

The Weyauwega Memorial Day parade will be held on Monday, May 28, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the American Legion clubhouse on Mill Street.

The American Legion and VFW posts, along with Boy and Girl scouts; the Weyauwega Fire Department; and the Weyauwega-Fremont High School Band, will march to Oakwood Cemetery for the memorial service.

Those who want to be a part of the parade are invited to join it.

The Memorial Day program at the cemetery will feature a guest speaker.

Music will be provided by the W-F High School Band and by Danny Darren.

If it rains, the program will be held at 8:45 a.m. at W-F Middle School on Ann Street.

Fremont

Memorial Day observances will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28 in Fremont.

Parade units will assemble at 9:30 a.m. in the Fremont-Wolf River American Legion parking lot behind the village hall.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed down Fillmore Street to Wolf River Drive to West Main Street before ending on Waupaca Street in front of the Legion hall.

The parade will include the American Legion Post 391 Color Guard and flag bearers representing the American Legion Auxiliary; the Weyauwega-Fremont High School marching band, under the direction of Andrea Laverenz; village police; Fremont-Wolf River Fire Department; Fremont-Wolf River Ambulance Services; Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts; 4-H club members; and several antique cars.

Anyone who wants to be a part of the parade should assemble at the Legion hall parking lot prior to the parade.

Services will be held following the parade at Wolf River Cemetery along County Road H. Legion Post 391 will supervise the cemetery services.

The guest speaker is the Rev. Alex Tychkin of Hope United Church of Christ, Fremont.

After the chaplain offers a prayer, students from Fremont Elementary School will read patriotic poems while Scouts place flowers at the graves of veterans.

Post 391 will then fire rifles into the air in tribute to America’s fallen soldiers. The ceremony will conclude with the sounding of “Taps.”

A potluck lunch at the Legion clubhouse will follow the ceremony. Those who wish to participate are asked to bring a dish to pass. Grilled sandwiches will be provided.

Iola

The Iola Memorial Day parade will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, May 28, at the Iola-Scandinavia High School and proceed through downtown to Legion Park.

Participating in the parade will be the American Legion Sheveland-Taylor Post #14 and Auxiliary, area scout troops and the I-S High School Band.

The Memorial Day program will be held at Legion Park, featuring guest speaker Charles Gipp, of Iowa, a 33-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Following the Legion Park ceremony, a potluck dinner will be held at the Iola Old Car Show Activity Center. All veterans and their families are invited.

Scandinavia

The American Legion Sheveland-Taylor Post 14 will have a program at the Scandinavia Bridge at 9:30 a.m. and at the Scandinavia Cemetery at 10 a.m.

Ogdensburg

A Memorial Day program will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, at Reid F. Murray Memorial Park.

Col Richard W. Kucksdorf will be the guest speaker.

He is a a division operations and training officer for the 86th Training Division, U.S. Army Reserves, at For McCoy.

The program will also feature prayers, readings and the sounding of “Taps.”
