Local players to compete in President’s Cup

Two Waupaca High School students and one from Iola-Scandinavia are competing this summer on a girls’ soccer team that will play in July in the National President’s Cup Tournament in Sacramento, Calif.

Sierra Patzke and Lizzi Hanke of Waupaca and Morgen Spees of Iola-Scandinavia are members of the Portage County Youth Soccer Club’s U16 Girls Central Select Strikers Team that won the Region II President’s Cup Tournament June 15-17 in Overland Park, Kan.

The tournament championship gave the Strikers a berth in the California tournament, to be held July 12-15.

The Strikers defeated teams from Kansas (6-0), Missouri (4-3) and South Dakota (4-3) to advance to the championship game June 17 and wrapped up the Kansas tournament with a 6-0 win over a team from Illinois.

Hanke had one of the team’s 20 goals in the tournament.

Patzke and Hanke received a donation from Waupaca-based Walleyes for Kids for the Kansas trip and the team is currently raising funds to make the trip to Sacramento.

Donations to support Hanke and Patzke can be sent to Denise Hanke, 130 Shadow Lake Drive, Waupaca, WI 54981. Checks should be made out to PCYS and all donations are tax-deductible.
