Public input needed on road project

There will be a Department of Transportation public information meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Dayton Town Hall. 2285 State Highway 22, regarding the construction at the intersection of County Road QQ and State 22.

This work is to begin immediately to my knowledge without a general public hearing. This intersection has been the scene of accidents and is a much traveled route between King and Rural and all points south of Waupaca. I travel this route almost daily so I see the number of vehicles trying to cross State 22 on County QQ.

As far as I know, the plan which will be explained at the Aug. 30 meeting, is to add left turn lanes off of State 22. This does make it safer for people traveling on 22 but it doesn’t do much for the people trying to cross.

I was told the traffic count was not high enough for a roundabout. This sounds hard to believe and totally disregards the local residents using the County QQ route. In fact, I believe this could make it more dangerous for traffic trying to cross.

Slowing traffic down with a roundabout would have helped a lot more in the long run. It will be interesting to see in the future whether more thought and local resident input should have taken place. It is far easier to get sensible input beforehand than to deal with irate reaction later when this doesn’t solve the problem.

As a person who tries to be proactive, I encourage input from as many sources as possible to consider the consequences of our actions. When will our government learn this?
