Writer?s workshop to kick off book festival

Next month’s Waupaca Book Festival will kick off its weekend with three workshops for writers.

The book festival, which will feature 16 authors, will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13.

The writers’ workshops are free, open to the public and will be held in the meeting rooms at the Waupaca Area Public Library.

Writers and aspiring writers are invited to attend any or all of the workshops.

Reservations are required.

To reserve a spot, register online at www.waupacalibrary.org or by calling the library at 715-258-4414. If there is room, walk-ins will be accepted.

The first Oct. 12 workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and will feature author Judy Bridges.

She will talk about how to decide what to write about, how to get organized and where to begin.

Bridges is the author of Shut Up & Write! and the founder of Redbird Studio writing center in Milwaukee.

From 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., author Darien Gee will discuss the art of writing memoirs.

She will share techniques on how to craft and organize ones work and will include guided writing exercises.

Those who attend the workshop should bring a pen and a notebook – no laptops.

Gee is the author of Friendship Bread: A Novel and also the national best selling author of three novels – Good Things, Sweet Life and Table Manners – under the name Mia King.

An alumna of Squaw Valley Community of Writers, she has been teaching creative writing workshops for more than 20 years.

In conjunction with the book festival, a Friendship Bread Baking Contest is being held.

Contestants are asked to bake any recipe of their choosing from the Friendship Bread Kitchen site at www.friendshipbreadkitchen.com or come up with their own recipe.

They should include the recipe, name, address and phone number on an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper and drop off that information and their baked items at the Waupaca Area Public Library before 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12.

Gee will judge the entries based on their originality, presentation and taste.

Prizes will be awarded, and Friendship Bread baked goods will be shared during her author presentation, which will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in a library meeting room.

Prizes will include signed copies of Friendship Bread: A Novel and the limited edition plate featured in the book with the words “Forget-Me-Not” on it.

The third writers’ workshop on Friday, Oct. 12 will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Author Lowell Peterson, editor Nancy Root Miller and book designer Camin Potts will guide participants through what happens after a manuscript is written.

They will talk about working with editors and designers, how to find a publisher, the costs of self publishing and what to expect once a printed book is in ones hands.
