ThedaCare offers flu clinics

ThedaCare will be offering flu vaccines in October at various locations in Waupaca and New London.

“The flu shot is the best, and easiest, bet for avoiding influenza,” said Dr. Michael Fetterolf, ThedaCare Physicians-New London, noting the vaccine also stops the spread of influenza to others.

People can get a flu vaccine at a ThedaCare Physicians office or a ThedaCare At Home flu clinic. The flu season runs from November to April, with most cases occurring between late December and early March.

But the flu isn’t a run of the mill cold, said Dr. Daniel Sutton, at ThedaCare Physicians-Waupaca.

“Usually when I talk to patients, I take time to talk to them that flu is not what people think it is,” he said. “It is a very severe respiratory illness that even to this day thousands of people die from each year,” Sutton said.

The vaccine does not only protect the patient but those around them, said Sutton. “Most people have exposure to older parents, younger children, who are much more susceptible,” he said.

Influenza can affect newborns or immune-suppressed patients who cannot receive the vaccine. Everyone should receive an annual flu shot, but some groups, such as children ages 6 months to 18 years old, pregnant women, people over the age of 50, people living with a chronic medical condition, people living in nursing homes, and healthcare workers are considered high-risk and should definitely receive the vaccination. “In vaccinating yourself you are protecting them,” said Dr. Sutton.

Patients can call their ThedaCare Physician office to schedule an appointment. The staff will handle any insurance billing needs and add any shots patients receive into their electronic medical record. Clinics are also available.
