Thunderbirds shut out Chargers

The final statistics might not look that impressive on paper, but the Iola-Scandinavia football team was able to post a 23-0 Central Wisconsin 8 Conference win Sept. 14 over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Neither team was able to establish a passing game, as the Thunderbirds mustered only 3 yards through the air. The Chargers weren’t much better with 22 yards, but the T-Birds came up with a pair of short TD runs, a punt return for a score and a safety.

Jake Hansen scored from a yard out in the first quarter, while John Prahl’s 43-yard punt return gave the home team a 14-0 halftime lead.

I-S added to its lead with Brady Huettner’s 4-yard TD run in the third quarter and Andrew Bauer wrapped up the scoring in the fourth quarter with a safety.

Huettner and Nick Wavruk combined for 108 of the T-Birds’ 153 yards on the ground, with Huettner leading the way with 58 yards on 14 carries. The Chargers had trouble establishing their ground game, as Cody Kasprak led the way with 31 of his team’s 55 yards. The T-Bird defense held the Chargers to three first downs in the game.

I-S improved to 1-2 in CWC-8 play and 2-2 overall.

The T-Birds will head to Stevens Point to take on Stevens Point Pacelli Friday, Sept. 21. Gametime at Goerke Field at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is set for 7 p.m.
