Waupaca runners first, second

Four top-10 finishes helped the Waupaca boys’ cross country team win the Amherst Invitational Sept. 11 at Standing Rocks County Park. The Comet girls’ team also had a big day at meet with a second-place finish.

James Warren Jr. led the way for the boys by placing fourth in 18:32, followed by Ryan Weise, fifth (18:45); Mitchell Rotta, sixth (18:50); Eric Bolwerk, ninth (19:01); Parker Sweeney, 18th (20:13); and Ryan Esch, 20th (20:29).

Michelle Petkovsek led the Comet girls by placing seventh in 18:01. Other finishes and times were Taylor Fabricius, ninth (18:15); Bailey Wanty, 10th (18:16); Autumn Schultz, 12th (18:40); Alisa Blank, 15th (18:58); Ashley Jeske, 17th (19:21); and Raina Eddy, 22nd (19:40).

Waupaca Middle School’s team also competed. The boys placed second, while the girls took third.

Top performances for the girls were Victoria Nowak, first; Mya Snyder, third; Kristin Petkovsek, 21st; and Ivy Miller, 26th. Top performers for the boys included Bruce Sternweis, fifth; Hunter Smith, ninth; Danny Esch, 10th; Luke Wanty, 13th; and Jon Heidger, 18th.

The Comets competed at the Wautoma Invitational Sept. 18 and will be at the Westfield Classic, which gets under way at 4 p.m. today (Thursday, Sept. 20). Waupaca will also host the Waupaca Invitational at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27. Teams scheduled to compete are Amherst, Fox Valley Lutheran, Green Bay Notre Dame, Iola-Scandinavia, Lakeland, Little Chute, Marinette, Menasha St. Mary Central, Peshtigo, Tomahawk, Westfield, Weyauwega-Fremont and Winneconne.
