Vandals have no respect for farmers

We have been farming in Scandinavia for 56 years.

This summer has been extremely hard because of the heat and lack of rain.

Now that harvest time has started, we find out how poor it is.

The reason I am writing this is because our local high school held Homecoming last week.

It’s so much fun to toilet paper all over and that doesn’t hurt anything – it’s just messy.

But some decided that it was fun to go tearing around in our corn field – the one with the nice corn cobs.

They thought it was fun to go in circles and create a maze.

The first night it happened was Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Not much damage was done because they just drove in and out of the field.

The second night, Oct. 3, it was just before 10 a.m. and we had turned the television off.

We heard a sound like a noisy truck and corn stalks breaking and snapping.

We went outside in time to get a description of the vandal’s truck.

Also, there was toilet paper all over the road.

Upon calling the high school, we receive the comment, “If you can’t prove it was our kids, just call the cops.”

We felt they could at least talk to the students and explain if they did it and don’t own up to it, there will be consequences.

They could also explain to the students what is right and what is wrong.

The young people need to have more respect for other people’s property. This is our livelihood.

Damages to our corn field could amount to $1,000-$2,000 or more.

We won’t know until after we pick up all of the corn cobs, piece by piece.
