Comets fall to Xavier at home

Appleton Xavier handed Waupaca a 74-61 loss Jan. 17 in an Eastern Valley Conference boys’ basketball matchup at Waupaca High School.

The Hawks scored the first nine points of the game and led 17-9 after one quarter and 33-29 at halftime.

Nate Nelson gave the Comets their first and only lead of the game – 41-40 – with a pair of free throws with 2:29 to go in the third quarter, but the Hawks went on a 19-2 run to go up by 16 and Waupaca never got any closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

Zander Neuville led Waupaca with 21 points, while Xavier’s Matt Ferris led all scorers with 23.
