“I just realized that the city is adding a toxic chemical to your water that is poisonous, will lower your kid’s IQ, turn your teeth brown, weaken your bones, inhibit your thyroid, and maybe even kill you.”
“All the experts say it’s safe and prevents cavities, but I don’t think they know what they’re talking about – because they have been misled by the American Dental Association.”
That’s a paraphrased version of Alderman Mayou’s recent (video-taped) epiphany on the city of Waupaca’s water fluoridation – a program he is supposed to supervise on our behalf.
To be clear: All of his allegations are false.
Every respected medical and dental brain-trust in the United States agrees that water fluoridation is safe, prevents many cavities, and saves you money.
But Mayou and his political ingènue, Lisa Funk, want you to believe that they know something that all the experts don’t know: there is a secret website that describes the government’s 60-year water fluoridation “hoax.”
This website – run by a family that collects non-profit donations and then uses those donations to pay each other a salary – has become more powerful than any website published by the CDC, the EPA, or the ADA.
The website attracts people who are “easily persuaded” because it is titillating – filled with fictional, barn-burning exposès, suchas:
“The ADA is in cahoots with chemical companies to make huge profits by disposing of toxic waste in your drinking water.” (Again: not true.)
Sounds like a supermarket tabloid headline or an email you usually get from your idiot cousin, right?
Not to Mr Mayou and Ms Funk – to them, apparently, it is a call to duty.
Their hysterical message for you: Warn your neighbors! You’re being poisoned! Ignore your dentist!
But enough about them.
Public health experts see water fluoridation as a God-send for poor children, who are very susceptible to developing a mouth full of untreated cavities. Without fluoridation, they are sentenced to a lifetime of broken and missing teeth.
Public health experts see the contrived hysteria over water fluoridation as the bane of our existence.
Why? Because it is the only public health program that must be started by politicians and can be ended by politicians – who are susceptible to hysterical activists.
Vaccinations, TB tests, breast cancer screening – all of these programs are controlled by health department leaders – all experienced physicians.
The CDC has an entire division – with a $16 million annual budget – dedicated to the health of the nation’s teeth. It is manned by highly experienced dentists, who are also leading public health scientists.
Like me, they have dedicated their entire adult life to the protection of the nation’s health.
These experts strongly recommend that Waupaca continue to fluoridate its water.
Or, you can entrust your child’s teeth to Mr Mayou and Ms Funk and their crazy Internet conspiracies.
One last fact: 5,000 CDC employees and their children live in Atlanta – where the city water is fluoridated.
Call your alderman today and demand that water fluoridation continue in Waupaca.
