Six teams get first-round byes

Six of the area’s 11 girls’ basketball teams will have a bye in the first round of the state tournament.

Tournament play in all five divisions kicks off with regional play Tuesday, Feb. 26, but Weyauwega-Fremont Amherst, New London, Wild Rose, Hortonville and Marion won’t play until they host a regional semifinal Friday, March 1.

Here’s a rundown of local teams and where they will play:

Division 2

Marshfield Sectional: No. 9 Waupaca at No. 8 Shawano; No. 1 New London and No. 3 Hortonville have a bye in the first round. New London will host the Waupaca/Shawano winner March 1, while Hortonville will host No. 6 Antigo.

Division 3

Ashwaubenon Sectional: No. 11 Clintonville at No. 6 Freedom.

Division 4

Waupaca Sectional: No. 6 Plainfield Tri-County at No. 3 Iola-Scandinavia; No. 12 Manawa at No. 5 Howards Grove; No. 1 Amherst, No. 2 Wild Rose and No. 4 Weyauwega-Fremont have a bye in the first round. Amherst will host the No. 4 Stevens Point Pacelli/No. 5 Rosholt winner March 1, while wild Rose will host the Iola-Scandinavia/Plainfield Tri-County winner and Weyauwega-Fremont will host the Manawa/Howards Grove winner. The sectional final is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Waupaca High School.

Division 5

Waupaca Sectional: No. 10 Northland Lutheran at No. 7 Almond-Bancroft; No. 1 Marion has a bye and will host the No. 8 Niagara/No. 9 Lena winner March 1. The sectional final will be held at 4 p.m. March 9 in Waupaca.

Regional finals are scheduled for Saturday, March 2; sectional finals will be played March 9; and the state semifinals and finals will be played March 14-16 at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
