Futility and absurdity of war

Some ambitious military women complained that the top ranks were closed to them, in their professional career advancement, because they were lacking combat commands; where the bullet hits the bone.

An increasingly desperate Defense Department has decided to allow them to become equal opportunity killers. I guess we’re supposed to be tolerant of that.

Looking at the record, our second place finish in Vietnam cost 68,000 American lives. Since then, 138,000 veterans of that fiasco have taken their own lives. But neither the electorate nor the public have shown much concern. We tend to bury unpleasantness and ignore the human cost of war.

Now, with two decade-long, failed crusades and 300,000 young warriors afflicted with Traumatic Brain Injury or Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, a veteran commits suicide every 80 minutes. Some take their families with them. This is a big chunk of our gun deaths; almost a “Sandy Hook ” every day. Why are we not appalled that this is what we are buying with our Defense dollars, and continue to do so?

Since women can now be more lethal, I think we should consider what 30,000 children from France and Germany did in 1212 AD, after their elders had failed in their last three Crusades to wrest Jerusalem from the Muslims. They believed that because of their innocence and earnest intentions, that Jesus would surely protect them and assure victory.

What happened was, when the Germans got to the Mediterranean Sea, they were sent home and the French were sold as sex slaves in North Africa. But if nothing else works it may be worth a try.
