McCann, Shawn Michael

Shawn Michael McCann, 58, of Waupaca, WI, formerly Flagler Beach, FL, passed away peacefully Sat. April 15, 2013 while visiting his brother Greg and wife Linda in Florida.

Shawn was born Oct. 18, 1954 in Elmhurst, IL, to the late Murtaugh M. (Scotty) and Patricia (nee King) McCann. He grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago until the age of 18, when he moved to Florida. A state where he spent many years learning his trade and working as a stone mason. He was a very talented craftsman and created many beautiful structures including restoration work in “Old St. Augustine” FL. While in Florida he enjoyed sailing hi-performance catamarans and being outdoors, but his greatest passion was in helping others who were suffering and had the opportunity to do just that. He is remembered as a man who would go to great lengths to help anyone in need, and did so whenever possible. He was a self-taught man with many artistic talents. He learned how to play the guitar at the age of 9 and loved to get together with family and friends, sitting around the kitchen table or bonfire telling stories, playing the guitar and singing solo, or with other musicians. He enjoyed reading, writing music and poetry and sketching. He moved to Waupaca in 1990, met the love of his life, Lisa and began building his business and raising a family. He loved doing masonry work, but a back injury cut his career short. The greatest joy in Shawn’s life was his family and none more than his oldest son Mason (who would naturally take up the craft of stone work,) his smart and beautiful daughter Marley, also very creative, and the youngest son Morgan who appears to have inherited his dad’s interests and creative talents in the arts. He was quiet, gentle, kind, funny and a good friend to many and will be missed by all who really knew him.

He is survived by his wife Lisa (nee Cate) McCann, his sons, Mason McCann, Morgan McCann and daughter Marley McCann, all of Waupaca. He is further survived by his brother Kevin (Diana) McCann, Missoula, MT; sisters, Candace (Ray) Bean, St. Charles, IL; Pam (Dick) Smykal, Wild Rose, WI; Leslie (Jim) Sutherland, St. Charles, IL; step-mother Marti, St. Petersburg, FL; sister Sharon (Jeff) Housholder, Tampa Bay, FL and brother Greg (Linda) Schram, Stuart, FL. Also, brother-in-law Danny (Cindy) Cate, Iola; sisters-in-law, Denise (Jeff) Maiman, Amherst; Tracy (Rick) Hansen; father-in-law Dave (Cindy) Cate, Waupaca; mother-in-law Donna (Alex) Saunders and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Faith Comm. Church, Waupaca with visitation from 9 to 11, and the Memorial Service from 11-12 on May 4, 2013. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established and memorials can be mailed to P.O. Box 213, King, WI 54946.

The Craftsman
by Marcus B. Christian
I ply with all the cunning of my art
This little thing, and with consummate care
I fashion it –so that when I depart,
Those who come after me shall find it fair
And beautiful. It must be free of flaws–
Pointing no laborings of weary hands;
And there must be no flouting of the laws
Of beauty–as the artist understands.
Through passion, yearnings infinite–yet dumb–
I left you from the depths of my own mind
And gild you with my soul’s white heat to plumb
The souls of future men. I leave behind
This thing that in return this solace gives:
“He who creates true beauty ever lives.”
