No chance for CWC title this season

Shiocton swept a softball doubleheader from Iola-Scandinavia May 2.

The Chiefs held on to take the first game 4-3 and handed the Thunderbirds a 15-9 loss in the second game that was stopped after six innings due to rain.

The T-Birds also picked up a 10-8 win April 30 over Stevens Point Pacelli.

Shiocton 4, I-S 3

After six innings of frustration at the plate, I-S scored three runs in the seventh inning, but fell one run short of tying the game when Kiara Boutwell’s well-hit fly ball with two outs and runners on second and third was caught by the center fielder to end the rally.

The T-Birds couldn’t get the big hit, as they left 12 runners on base. Brooke Phillips had two of the T-Birds’ eight hits. Amanda Aasen drove in two runs in the seventh on a single.

Pitcher Payton Erickson went the distance in the first game and allowed five hits and no walks while striking out eight batters, but took the loss.

Shiocton 15, I-S 9 (6 inn.)

Kylie Johnson had three hits, including a run-scoring double in the second. Jane Oligney and Brianne Huettner had two hits. Oligney had a double and a triple, while Huettner had two doubles.

Huettner started the second game and pitched three innings before giving way to Erickson. Huettner allowed three walks while striking out three batters. Erickson allowed one walk and picked up a strikeout.

I-S 10, Pacelli 8

I-S rallied for eight runs in the sixth inning and held off Pacelli in the final inning for a come-from-behind victory over the Cardinals.

With the score tied 2-2 after five innings, Pacelli scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead before the T-Birds rallied in the bottom half of the inning. I-S collected five hits and took advantage of three walks and a hit batter. Aasen and Johnson singled to score two runs, while Brooke Phillips had one of her three RBIs on a single.

Johnson, Phillips, Huettner and Karina Welch each had two hits. Phillips had a two-run home run in the first and Huettner added a double in the third.

Huettner scattered eight hits over six innings to get the win. She gave up four walks and struck out six batters, while Erickson worked the seventh to get the save.

The T-Bird junior varsity team did not get to play any games in the past week. Weyauwega-Fremont cancelled their game due to a lack of players, while games against Shiocton and Plainfield Tri-County were cancelled due to inclement weather and wet field conditions. The T-Birds have a 3-3 record.

Upcoming schedule

The varsity team will travel to Stevens Point today (Thursday, May 9) for a for a 4 p.m. rematch with the Cardinals, while the JV team will host Pacelli for a doubleheader at 4:30 p.m.

The varsity team will host Weyauwega-Fremont at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, while the JV team will play in Weyauwega. The JV team will also travel to Amherst to play the Falcons at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, and Bonduel at 11:30 a.m. The varsity team will finish up its regular season schedule by hosting a doubleheader with Amherst at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 13.
