Veteran’s perspective about Memorial Day

Every year at about this time, folks’ thoughts turn to Memorial Day, and our nation marks this special day to honor the veterans of our great land.

Special observance and exercises are held in every community large and small across the United States.

It is a time to remember and reflect upon the ultimate sacrifice so many veterans made to protect our country, and to those veterans who also served and followed their comrades later.

It is our fervent hope that these brave men and women, who served so gallantly along with those who made the ultimate sacrifice, may somehow become aware of our unending gratitude for their service.

May our ceremonies reveal our sincere intent to comfort and console grieving families for the loss of loved ones in more recent conflicts.

As a veteran of WWII, I can only hope that world leaders will finally realize the human carnage they have caused over centuries of wars that never ended in a prolonged peace, but simply fostered another conflict.

The human sacrifice is intolerable and it is time to find a sensible, intelligent and humane course to world peace.

By doing so, we would truly honor the memory of our fallen heroes.
